Welcome to the Employee Plant & Seed Swap!
The basics
Hello Plant Swappers! Thank you for participating in the Plant and Seed Swap. On May 17th, bring in your indoor and outdoor plants, and seeds to share. Plants will be collected on the picnic table in Portland and on the back porch in Brunswick. Here is some information to help you get ready!
How to divide INDOOR PLANTS:
When cutting off plantlets from indoor plants, use a sharp knife or shears, taking care not to crush the stem.
When taking cuttings of most leafy plants, cut low enough on the stem to leave 3-4 leaf nodes, or sets of leaves, intact. Other plants can be propagated from one leaf, sections of leaves, or simply dividing new plantlets off the mother plant, depending on the plant.
Place cuttings in water immediately, or wrap in a wet paper towel and place in a plastic bag. This is not necessary for cuttings that need to callus over, like succulents, cacti, sansevierias, etc.
How to divide OutDoor perennial:
Dig up the parent plant using a spade or fork.
Gently lift the plant out of the ground and remove any loose dirt around the roots.
Separate the plant into smaller divisions by any of these methods:
Gently pull or tease the roots apart with your hands;
Cut them with a sharp knife or spade;
Or put two forks in the center of the clump, back to back, and pull the forks apart.
Each division should have three to five shoots and a healthy supply of roots.
Keep these divisions shaded and moist until they are replanted.
Lastly, please label plants clearly. We will provide stickers and markers, if needed.
We look forward to seeing everyone's beautiful plants.
