What is your cancellation policy?

We require at least 24 hours notice of any change to your appointment time. This gives us ample time and resources to fill the appointment slot with another patient that is waiting for an appointment. If you need to reschedule or cancel the appointment less than 24 hours in advance, we charge you a fee of $75. We cannot bill the fee to your insurance.

We firmly stand by our policy so that we can continue to provide dedicated one-to-one patient care while also paying our providers and support staff for their time. This fee can be waived if you're able to reschedule your appointment within the same calendar week. Our highest priority is for you to make it to your appointments and achieve your health goals!

PHYSICAL THERAPY

What can I expect at my first physical therapy visit?

Your first physical therapy appointment will last about one hour. It will include an initial evaluation consisting of the physical therapist taking a medical history, discussing your goals taking strength and range of motion measurements, and performing special tests to determine what structures are contributing to your issue. From there, the physical therapist will discuss the findings and work with you to develop a treatment plan. You may be given an initial home exercise program, receive manual therapy or review education materials on your first visit.

If you are coming in with a pelvic health related diagnosis such as incontinence, internal pelvic pain or post-prostate surgical complications, your therapist may recommend an internal pelvic exam on the first visit. If you prefer not to have an internal exam, you can decline and your therapist will still be able to help you towards achieving your goals. An internal pelvic exam gives your therapist valuable information about strength, muscle tone, coordination and endurance of the pelvic musculature and soft tissues.

What modalities do physical therapists use during treatment?

At Jade, our physical therapists combine multiple modalities for every patient. Some of our most commonly used modalities include therapeutic exercises such as strength training and stretching, manual therapy, biofeedback, kinesiotaping, neuromuscular re-education and dry needling. Less often, we use ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and iontophoresis.

How many sessions will I need?

There are many factors that contribute to determining how many physical therapy sessions you will need including severity of the problem, past medical history, age, and compliance with home exercises. Your physical therapist will set up a plan and schedule your visits at the end of your first appointment. Typically, for straightforward orthopedic conditions, patients can expect to be seen for 6-10 treatments.

ACUPUNCTURE

What can I expect at my first acupuncture visit?

Your initial acupuncture treatment at Jade is typically about 30 minutes of patient interview and diagnosis, followed by about 60 minutes of treatment. Our licensed acupuncturists will ask a full range of questions to assess your current health as a whole. Some questions may feel unrelated to your situation, but a full, detailed picture of your overall wellbeing allows us to craft a treatment plan to meet your unique needs. Traditional diagnostic methods may include tongue inspection, pulse assessment, as well as channel and abdomen (or hara) palpation.

Follow up treatments at Jade are typically 55 minutes. Your acupuncturist will check in with you on your response to the last treatment and how you are progressing prior to inserting needles. Most patients receive treatment on both sides-a face up treatment and face down treatment. You will find that this level of care is rare, but we feel it is very important!

What modalities do acupuncturist use during treatment?

Traditional East Asian Medicine has many foundational pillars, but acupuncture is the best known. Acupuncture is the practice of inserting thin filiform (“thread-like”) needles to aid the body in healing and returning to balance. It engages the body’s energies to enhance its own natural healing process. Acupuncturists are also taught to use other treatment methods to improve patients outcomes: moxibustion, cupping, GuaSha(scraping), and TuiNa/Shiatsu (massage) to name a few.

Moxibustion is the art of using small amounts of processed mugwort leaf to warm specific areas of the body. It can be applied directly to the skin, or attached to already inserted needles. This enables practitioners to boost a patient’s energy levels, increase immune response, or speed the healing of injuries.

GuaSha is the practice of using various implements (made of stone, metal, or porcelain) to release stagnation from the body. It is primarily used to break up adhesions and scar tissue that cause pain and decreased mobility. GuaSha is an excellent way to bring fresh Qi and Blood to chronic problem areas, like tight shoulders or shin splints; but its also a great way to reduce inflammation around recent injuries. It's especially good for helping to open up the "Wind Gates" of the upper back to fight seasonal colds and improve. lung function.

TuiNa and Shiatsu are just two schools of massage, or manual manipulation, that can be used to increase blood flow, reduce tension, and alleviate pain. Shiatsu tends to focus on direct pressure to specific points to speed healing; TuiNa addresses pain at multiple levels by pressing, grasping, or rolling larger pathways of the body, also known as Channels. Manual therapies are great for old orthopedic injuries that pop back up when the weather gets cold, but they can also be invaluable tools to address sleep disturbances, digestive mobility, or menstrual irregularity.

Does acupuncture hurt?

People often confuse acupuncture needles with hypodermic needles. Acupuncture needles are 5 to 10 times smaller than syringes, and nothing is injected. Now, thats not to say that you wont feel anything. Typical sensations associated with acupuncture needling are feelings of dullness, heaviness, or slight tingling sensations. It’s even quite common to feel something moving along a limb, or in different parts of the body; but pain is not on the menu.

How do herbal prescriptions work?

Chinese Herbal Medicine is an evidence-based science, rooted in over 2500 years of trial and error. Single herbs and combinations of herbs (known as formulas) have helped the Chinese people through eons of typhoid infestations, malarial diseases, digestive issues, edema, physical trauma from major land wars, just to name a few... Like acupuncture, practitioners use herbal medicine to help the body regain balance. And just as you are more than the sum of your parts, single herbs are combined to increase their effectiveness.

Jade keeps many traditional formulas stocked, and our herbalists can even adapt prescriptions to a patient’s unique condition. We also make taking the formulas easy by providing quick dissolving granules. Just add water!

YOGA THERAPY

How does yoga therapy work?

Yoga therapy is offered to our physical therapy and acupuncture patients as part of the plan of care. It may be covered by you insurance if you are a physical therapy patient at Jade.

As in all services offer at Jade, we meet patients and yogis where they are at. If the student is new to yoga, they will be given a foundation of knowledge about yoga participation. If they have an established yoga practice, they may be introduced to a new style of yoga that may meet their physical needs more effectively.Everyone will have the opportunity to workshop postures that are challenging for them and refine a yoga practice practice for improved strength, mobility and wellness.

The goal of yoga therapy is for patients to receive instruction and ultimately transition to an independent home practice or to participate in a group class. This is the magic of including yoga in your rehabilitation. If you leave physical therapy with the ability to safely select and participate in a yoga class, then you are on your way to preventing future injury and establishing better movement habits for the rest of your life. Let the option of a yoga 1-on-1 allow us to meet your movement needs and provide a skill for a more balanced body.

What is the difference between yoga therapy, a yoga 1-on-1 and a yoga classes?

In a yoga class, the student selects the type of yoga practiced. However, they do not select the sequence. The movement offered in a group yoga class may not be safe to practice with the student’s specific injury and is unlikely to be targeted to be beneficial to that individual student.

In a yoga therapy, the yoga student is given a yoga sequence designed for them and their specific movement needs identified by the physical therapist. The style of yoga is decided by the yoga practitioner and coordinated with the physical therapist, to match these movement needs. Yoga therapy is typically covered under your physical therapy benefit.

A yoga one-on-one is very similar to yoga therapy, but it does not have to be connected or within an active course of physical therapy. Yoga one-on-one sessions may just be a weekly relaxing, self-care gift you give yourself! Yoga one-on-ones are a self-pay only.

What can yoga therapy help?

Yoga addresses strength, flexibility, balance, posture, alignment, breath control and motor control resulting in increased functioning of the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems.
