Gua Sha

The basics

Traditional East Asian Medicine has a simple therapeutic technique known as Gua Sha or stroking to raise petechiae. Gua sha boasts the immune system and provides lasting health benefits. The practice consists of using a plastic or jade tool or a spoon to repetitively scrape the skin in unidirectional short or long stroke. These strokes can be done on the back, arms, legs or face. This action stimulates blood flow, microcirculation, and the movement of stagnant qi. For most patients, skin can become red or red-purple after a gua sha treatment, but this discoloration will slowly fade over a few days.
