The Year of the Earth Dog

The Chinese New Year falls on Friday, February 16th this year. Also known as the Spring Festival in China and Taiwan, it is celebrated for the entire week and is a good time for spring cleaning and wearing bright red for good luck. On this special day it is wise to avoid accidents and focus on gentleness and appreciation to create a beneficial influence for the rest of the year.

Dynamic Warm-Up Stretches for Winter Activities

For all of you who have made fitness goals in the new year, here's a bonus: living in Maine IS like a workout in the winter! So whether or not you consider yourself an athlete, consider doing a few dynamic warm-up stretches prior to going out to shovel, for a ski, or for a skate...whatever your physically-demanding winter activities (either by choice or by force) may be! A proper warm-up will help you perform at your best, and reduce the risk of injury. Here are a few short video clips of great dynamic warm-up exercises to try:

  1. Reverse Lunge with Lateral Flexion
  2. Forward Lunge Twist
  3. Leg Cradle
  4. Inverted Hamstring Stretch

Heather Wacksman received her BS in Clinical Science and her Masters degree in Physical Therapy at Ithaca College in New York. She has over 10 years of clinical experience in outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine settings across the country She is also a certified yoga instructor and has completed the kinesiotaping certification course. She has participated in biomechanical and orthopedic research at the University of Rochester, served as a clinical instructor, and has taken many continuing ed courses ranging from manual therapy and manipulation, to orthopedic, women’s health and sports medicine. She is a “Mainah” born and raised and looks forward to helping the people of the greater Portland community achieve wellness!

Portland Trails to Ale 10K

The 14th annual Portland Trails to Ale 10k takes place this September 22nd on the beautiful Eastern Promenade, and we here at Jade Integrated Health will be providing yoga and massage.  This race gives runners the perfect opportunity to use the trails and walkways the local organization, Portland Trails, works so hard to maintain throughout the year.  In addition to offering beautiful scenery, participants are invited to attend the ever popular after race party featuring pizza from Portland Pie, Co beer from Shipyard Brewing, and massages and yoga sessions offered by none other than yours truly, Jade Integrated Health.
